Howl! Happening has a long history of celebrating art that draws inspiration from queer culture/sub-culture and reflects upon the experiences of gay artists in downtown NYC. This bundle showcases a sample of queer art at Howl from past years - from the exuberant and emotional painted portraits by Tabboo! (Stephen Tashjian) to Tony Whitfield’s meditative text-based self-portraits that articulate his experiences as a Black, queer man. “When Jackie met Ethyl” offers a unique exploration of performers Jackie Curtis and Ethyl Eichelberger, two of the most influential figures from the East Village’s heyday as a cauldron of transgressive gender-twisting performance. And the pioneering artist and Stonewall veteran Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt is featured in a lavish extended-length catalog (106 pages) that pairs his wholly unique visual language of reflection and refraction with the complex intersections of sexuality, class, and religion.
