Howl! Happening was established to honor the late Arturo Vega, his life and work, and his support for East Village artists.
Escaping the repressive violence of an authoritarian regime under Mexico’s “perfect dictatorship,” Arturo Vega made his way to New York City in the early 70s. Vega implicitly understood the revolutionary and transformative power of music, performance, and art. While working on his first series of paintings inspired by supermarket signs, he befriended members of the Ramones. He went on to design the Ramones’ ubiquitous logo, paint backdrops for their stage, and create a lighting scheme to enhance their effect, establishing a visual imagery that defined the transgressive aesthetic of punk rock by co-opting and questioning symbols of power. Vega has been the subject of three retrospective exhibitions at Howl, showcasing and contextualizing his visual art and exploring his considerable impact on popular culture.
Celebrate Vega’s legacy with three oversized catalogs (each 14 x 9 inches) and a special-edition “Arturo Vega Foundation” t-shirt.
